Crossfield is a pilot. but not just any pilot. He gained a reputation as a pilot whose flights were jinxed: On his first X-4 flight, he lost both engines; on his next, he flamed out; the windshield iced over in the third flight. After a deadstick landing in a North American F-100, he lost hydraulic pressure and slammed into a hangar wall. But he keeps on flying. He just can’t help himself.
